What Etsy Actually Charges You (And Why It Never Feels Like Enough Fees, Somehow)

None of them are hidden exactly, they’re just scattered across your Payment Account like Etsy doesn’t want you doing the maths in one sitting. So here’s the maths, done properly, fee by fee.

Listing fee — around £0.18

Every listing costs you $0.20 to publish, whether it sells or not — Etsy bills everyone in USD, no matter where you’re based. At today’s exchange rate that’s roughly £0.15.

If you’re not VAT-registered, add the 20% VAT on Etsy’s fees (more on that below) and it lands closer to £0.18 — which is why most sellers just round it to “about 20p” and move on. It lasts four months, or until the item sells — then it renews and you’re charged again.

Multi-quantity listing? Same story: sell one unit, Etsy quietly relists and bills you another 20p. Doesn’t sound like much until you’ve got 300 live listings ticking over every four months.

Transaction fee — 6.5%

This is the big one, and the one that catches people out. It’s 6.5% of the total order — item price, your shipping charge, gift wrapping, the lot. Not just the product price.

I’ve seen sellers price their item tight to the bone and forget Etsy’s also taking a cut of the postage they charge. Build it into your numbers from the start.

Payment processing fee — 4% + £0.20

This is Etsy’s charge for actually handling the card payment, and it’s separate from the transaction fee above — yes, you pay both.

For UK sellers using Etsy Payments it’s 4% of the order total plus a flat 20p per order. That flat fee is the one that really stings on low-price items — a £4 print pays the same 20p as a £40 hoodie, so cheap listings lose a much bigger slice proportionally.

Regulatory Operating Fee — 0.48%

Etsy’s own explanation is that this covers the “increased cost of operating” in certain countries — basically compliance overheads Etsy’s decided to pass on rather than absorb.

It applies to a handful of markets, the UK included, and it’s calculated on your full order value (item + shipping) same as the transaction fee. It crept up from 0.32% to 0.48% in June 2026, so if your maths from an old spreadsheet doesn’t add up any more, that’s why.

VAT on Etsy’s fees — 20%

Here’s the one loads of sellers miss entirely: if you’re not VAT-registered, Etsy adds 20% VAT on top of its own fees — the listing fee, transaction fee, processing fee, all of it.

It’s not VAT on your sale, it’s VAT on what Etsy’s charging you for the privilege of selling. If you’re VAT-registered and you’ve added your VAT number to your account, this one drops away. If you’re not, it’s just another 20% stacked on everything above.

Currency conversion fee — 2.5%

This one only bites if your shop lists in a currency that doesn’t match your bank account — say you’re listing in USD to look more appealing to American buyers, but your payout lands in a GBP account.

Etsy converts the balance and takes 2.5% off the sale amount for the privilege. Straight from Etsy’s own policy: list in the same currency as your payment account and you avoid this one completely. If you’re deliberately listing in USD for the US market, at least know it’s costing you 2.5% every time the money comes home.

Offsite Ads fee — 12–15%

Etsy runs ads for your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest — and if a buyer clicks one of those and buys within 30 days, you pay for it. It’s optional at 15% until your shop turnover crosses roughly £8,000 in a rolling 12 months, at which point it becomes mandatory at 12%. You can’t dodge it once you’re over the threshold, so it’s worth building into your pricing rather than being surprised by it on your first big month.

Add it all up and it’s not unusual for 15–25% of a sale to disappear before your production costs even get a look-in — more on cheap items, less on higher-ticket ones where the flat fees matter less.
